Common Excuses People Make to Ignore Long-Term Care Insurance
If there’s one thing that we Americans are pretty good at, it’s making excuses, especially to avoid doing things (or buying things) we don’t want or think we need. One topic that many Americans don’t even think much about is the prospect of requiring long-term care in the future. As a result, they don’t think they need a long-term care insurance policy or have no desire to look into it seriously.
There are numerous excuses that people make to avoid looking into long-term care insurance, but three of the most common ones are listed below. If you find yourself nodding while reading at least one of these excuses because you’ve made them, too, it’s time to step back and see why (if you are in your early to mid-50s) it’s time to consider it instead seriously.
Common Excuse #1: My health coverage is excellent.
Why would you need long-term care insurance? If your health insurance coverage is top-notch, isn’t that enough? In reality, most people don’t realize this, but the majority of health insurance policies only cover short-term care, not long-term care.
In the event, that you or your spouse or other dependent required long-term care, guess who would have to pay for it out-of-pocket? That’s right… you. If you don’t believe that, check with your primary health insurance provider and find out. You may be stunned to learn that long-term care is not going to be covered. It may be excellent, but that won’t change the fact that you could be on the hook for those expenses yourself.
Common Excuse #2: I don’t need it yet.
If you are in your mid to late 40s, or early to mid-50s, you might be assuming that long-term care is only for people in their 70s, 80s, or 90s. While that may be the majority of men and women who require long-term care, it’s not the only age bracket.
You may be in excellent health and your family history could be awesome, but you simply don’t know what tomorrow will bring. A car accident, a slip down the stairs, an aneurysm, a heart attack, a stroke, or something else could happen at any time, completely unexpected.
If you don’t have proper insurance, you could find yourself completely devastated financially by an unexpected medical emergency.
Common Excuse #3: I can’t afford long-term care insurance.
This is probably one of the top excuses people make to avoid paying for certain types of insurance they don’t want in the first place. They say it is not affordable, so why bother?
Well, if you sat down and went over your current expenses month by month, you would probably find more than enough disposable income that is spent on truly unnecessary things. Just look at your streaming services or regular subscriptions you pay for monthly. They might add up to hundreds and hundreds of dollars every month without you even realizing it.
That could more than cover long-term care insurance for somebody in their late 40s or early 50s. Instead, what you should be thinking about is how much it could cost you in 10 or 20 years should you need long-term care! When you look into the expense of long-term care right now, you might realize that yes, you can afford it, if you want it.
