What’s the elephant in the room? It could be a lot of things. For some, especially if they have a family member who is getting older, who is dealing with increased health issues, or who is at an increased risk of developing certain health conditions or emergencies, it could be long-term care. It’s easy to avoid talking about, especially when assuming family will rally around to help out, if needed.

It’s not easy to talk about these things.

A lot of people refer to the ‘elephant in the room’ when talking about an addiction, anger, or other issues that are negatively impacting that individual’s life, or even the family around them. The phrase essentially refers to a major topic everyone knows is there and is important to talk about, but no one really wants to acknowledge.
When talking about long-term care, this could very well be an elephant in the room for a lot of people.

It’s because people don’t want to talk about the prospect of a family member, such as an aging mother or father, requiring assistance. They don’t want to think about their loved ones becoming frail, having difficulty at home, or being unsafe just getting out of bed. They don’t want to think about those things because then they have to think about mortality, losing that loved one, and having to deal with the rest of their life not having them there to rely upon or talk to.

So, those ‘elephants in the room’ get brushed under the rug and forgotten about, at least for a while. That is not helping anyone, though.

It’s important to talk about it because when it comes to long-term care, the cost of care continues to increase tremendously, often outpacing inflation and general raises in pensions, Social Security, or salaries.

If a person suddenly requires extended home care support or needs to go to a nursing home for several months, it has the potential to completely financially obliterate an entire family. It can wipe out savings, force the individual and their family to sell their house, and leave them with almost nothing.

Most people build a retirement savings and protect their assets as well as they can, but if they don’t discuss long-term care options for insurance, they’re doing a disservice to themselves, their family, and their financial future.

No, long-term care might never be needed, but as people get older those chances increase exponentially each passing year.
